Snow falls through the tall pines, fog drifts between the trunks, and the only light is the old brass lantern she holds high. She calls out, "Is anyone there?" but only an owl answers, and the snow fills her footprints behind her. Near a steaming hot spring among the rocks, she reaches for a fallen branch, and a black viper uncoils from the warm stones, hissing. She freezes, holding her breath, until it slides away into the snow. Then she sees amber eyes in the dark. A huge Siberian tiger with orange fur and black stripes steps out between the trees, stalking her through the snow. She raises the lantern and backs away, then runs, the tiger's growl close behind her. Through the falling snow she finds an old wooden house, half buried and abandoned. She slams the door and bars it as the tiger's claws scrape the wood outside. In the dark corner, something huge stirs: a great brown bear with thick shaggy fur and a pale scar on its muzzle, sheltering from the storm. Mira trembles, but the bear only looks at her lantern, then walks to the door and lets out a thunderous roar. Outside, the tiger's footsteps fade into the night. Mira lights the old fireplace. The bear lies down beside the warm glow, and she carefully shares her bread with it. They fall asleep together as the snow keeps falling. At dawn, golden light pours through the frozen trees. The bear walks beside her through the snow and leads her to the edge of the forest, where the lights of her village glow in the valley. Mira turns back, gently touches its head, and whispers, "Thank you, my friend." The bear watches her go, then disappears into the white forest.
